GLOSSARY Sanskrit Terms Used in the Text
Acyuta-gotra Vaisnava, Tridandi sannyasi belonging to the family of Krsna Acyuta-sak A variety of wild spinach love by Lord Caitanya aropa-siddha A stage in 'bhakti' marked by the absence of spontaneity; nevertheless 'bhakti is evoked by specific performances for offerings to the Lord. asta-kaliya-yajna Twenty-four hours are divided into eight three hour periods. Each period has a name and a concomitant pastime of the Divine couple. astanga-yoga The eightfold path of mystic yoga system. asvamedha-yajna A grand sacrifice performed only by kings. A sacrificial horse protected by an army is sent to all kingdoms as a challenge to the independent kings.

Goloka Vrndavana The highest realm in the spiritual world where Lord Krsna is eternally sporting with His associates. hladini One of the three internal potencies of Krsna which gives pleasure to Krsna, She is embodied in the form of Srimati Radharani. kachu-sak A delicious leafy vegetable which forms the top portion of a variety of celery. Very common to Asia. Kali-yuga The last of the cycle of four yugas, or ages. kanistha-adhikari A neophyte devotee or third class devotee karma-kanda First of the three sections of the Vedas dealing with rituals and demigod worship. karmakandis Followers of the Karma-kanda. kirtana Singing or the loud chanting of the Lord's holy name. Kundali-Jagai 'Kundali' means quarrelsome. A name given to Jagadananda Pandita for his odd predilection. madhyama-adhikari An intermediate devotee or second class devotee. magha A winter month of the Bengali calendar, starting mid-December to mid-January. maha-mantra the great chant for deliverance consisting of the Lord's holy names maha-prasadam An offering of food-stuff made first to the Supreme Lord's Deity form and then to the pure devotee of the Lord, the remnants there of. markata-vairagya ''Markata' means a monkey and 'vairagya' is renunciation: in other words false renunciation. moca-khanda A delicious preparation made from banana flower. A favoured dish of Lord Caitanya. mukti Liberation: there are four kinds accepted by the Vaisnavas, and the fifth (sayujya) is rejected by them. Mayapura The birth place of Lord Caitanya situated in Bengal on the banks of the holy Ganga mayavadis Impersonalists who reject the form and personality of the Supreme Lord. namabhasa The stage of clearing offenses in the process of chanting the holy name. namaparadhas Ten offenses to be avoided while chanting te holy name. Navadvipa Navadvipa Dhama. Situated in Bengal, consisting of nine islands and is an exact replica of Vraja Vrndavana. pandita A learned person, a scholar. parakiya bhava In the conjugal mood of worship the devotee sees Radha and Krsna's dealing as is between the beloved and her paramour paramatma Supersoul, the Lord within everyone's heart phalgu-vairagya 'Phalgu' is a river which is covered by sand banks but flows forcefully below it. Therefore this type of false renunciation makes an external show of abnegation while strong material desires flow inside. prakrti Nature; the feminine principle in the form of Krsna's energy enjoyed by Him. pranava Another name of Omkara, the original sound representative of Krsna. pranaya Amorous exchanges prarabdha Results of actions carried out in the previous life which is about to mature. prasadam mercy; remnants of food-stuff first offered to the Supreme Lord. purusa The male factor; Krsna is the only purusa, the enjoyer of all His energies or prakrti. Prayaga Important pilgrimage in N. India near Allahabad where the three holy rivers Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati meet. It is also the site for 'Kumbha mela'. prayascitta penance Rajasuya-yajna A sacrifice performed by paramount rulers Sahajiyas An unauthorised cult engaged in loose and promiscuous practices but arrogate as devotees. sambandha-jnana the knowledge of the eternal relationships between the Supreme Lord, His multifarious energies and the 'jiva'. sankhya-yoga A branch of yoga system which follows the philosophy of deduction through negation. sanga-siddha Perfection in spiritual life attained through associating with pure devotees. sanga-siddha bhakti The devotional practice of attaining perfection through saintly association. sannyasi The last of the four spiritual orders of life which demands severing of worldly ties. Satya-yuga The first of the four yugas or ages. seva-aparadha Offences one commits in the course of rendering worship and service to the Supreme Lord. Siksastaka A collection of eight verses, the only composition left behind by Lord Caitanya. sloka A Sanskrit verse smarana The third of the eight limbs of devotional service (remembrance) smrti A part of the Vedic scriptures sraddha Faith sruti Another name for the Vedas. svarupa-siddha One who has attained the perfection of being situated in his original spiritual self. svarupa-siddha bhakti The devotional science that leads to 'svarupa siddhi' or perfection. tilaka The Vaisnavas markings on the twelve different parts of the body. Vaikuntha The spiritual abode of Lord Narayana, Visnu. vaisnavas Devotees of Lord Visnu, Krsna. vanaprastha The third of the four spiritual orders of life where one retires from social activities. varnasrama A system of Vedic society which divides the society into four social and spiritual orders. varnasrama dharma Vedic religious society of varnasrama Vedas The four Vedas, religious scriptures of the Hindus and the oldest known scripture in history. vedic mantras Hymns and chants from the Vedas. vikara Transformation Vraja-dhama A hundred and sixty four square miles area in Mathura where Lord Krsna performed His glorious pastimes. Vrndavana A village in Vraja yoga The process of union with the Supreme Lord. yahkaumaraharah A passage from a famous romantic poem in Sanskrit that Lord Caitanya recited while dancing in front of Lord Jagannatha's rath. yukta-vairagya The path of renunciation that teaches detachment through utilising everything in the Lord's service for His satisfaction
